How often to check it

A monthly inspection is what Bosch asks for in the BGH96 manual, replacing the filter when it is dirty (Bosch BGH96 Installation and Operating Instructions BTC 772003301 C (06.2025) RevC, PDF page 24). A thick media filter in a separate cabinet follows the cabinet maker's schedule; the furnace documents above do not give one.

MERV and airflow

A higher MERV number means finer media, and finer media resists airflow more. How much more? For this model's 16 x 25 size, Bryant's 912SE manual lists a clean 1-inch fiberglass filter at 0.08 in. w.c. and a clean 1-inch pleated one at 0.29 in. w.c., both at 800 CFM (Table 7, Bryant 912SE-03 Installation, Start-up, Operating and Service and Maintenance Instructions, PDF page 20).

Bryant's advice is to keep the filter's drop under 0.2 in. w.c. and, for the best blower efficiency, under 0.1 (Bryant 912SE-03 Installation, Start-up, Operating and Service and Maintenance Instructions, PDF page 19). A 4-inch media cabinet spreads the air over more media. Read your furnace manual's airflow limits before you switch.
