How to read a Amana model number

Goodman, Amana and Daikin share one numbering system, built by the same company. The cabinet width letter near the end of the model number is the part that decides the filter size.

Goodman/Amana current families (GMVC96, AMVC96, GCVC96, ACVC96, GMEC96, AMEC96, GMSS96/92, AMSS96/92, GM9S96, GMVM97, AMVM97, GMES80, GM9S80, GMS8, GR9S80, GR9S96, GR9T96, AMVC8, AMEH8)

How to read it: Example GMVC960603BN: characters 1 brand, 2 configuration, 3 motor, 4 gas valve, 5-6 AFUE, 7-9 input in thousands of BTU/h, 10 max cooling airflow code, 11 cabinet width, 12 NOx/gas code, 13-14 engineering revision.

Letter 1: brand
CodeMeaning
GGoodman
AAmana
DDaikin (Daikin uses DM/DC + AFUE + 2 letters, e.g. DM96VC)
FFranklin edition (e.g. FGM9S80, seen on SS-FGM9S80)
Letter 2: airflow direction
CodeMeaning
Mupflow/horizontal (multi-position)
Cdownflow (counterflow)/horizontal
Rupflow/horizontal (newer R/D naming, e.g. GR9S80)
Ddownflow/horizontal (GD9S96) or dedicated downflow (GDS8)
Hhigh airflow / horizontal (GHS8)

Heating input digits: three digits = thousands of BTU/h input (040 = 40,000; 060 = 60,000; 120 = 120,000). Older 95% families use 045/070/090/115 (= 45k/69k/92k/115k approx; check spec sheet).

Airflow digit: largest cooling blower
CodeMeaning
2800 CFM
31200 CFM
41600 CFM
52000 CFM
Cabinet width letter (inches wide)
CodeMeaning
A14.0
B17.5
C21.0
D24.5
Emissions (NOx) letter
CodeMeaning
Nnatural gas / low NOx (40 ng/J in newer sheets; GM9S80 sheet says N = > 40 NG/J)
Xlow NOx (< 40 ng/J)
Uultra-low NOx (< 14 ng/J)

Last letters: trailing letters (A, B, AA, BB ...) = engineering revision; not used for inventory control per SS-GMVC96

Filter pattern in the maker tables (not a maker rule): Not a rule from the maker, just the pattern in the tables: A (14in) cabinets: 16x25 side or 14x24/14x25 bottom; B and most C cabinets: one 16x25 side or bottom; big C/D cabinets: 20x25 (or 24x24) bottom or two 16x25 side. Downflow: two 10x20 or one 14x25/16x25 top return for small; two 14x20 or one 20x25 for large.

Related families from the same maker group

These share parts of the numbering system with Amana, so they can help with an older or rebadged label.

Daikin (DM96VC, DC96VC, DM96SC, DM96SN, DM80VC, DC80VC, DM97MC)

How to read it: Example DM96VC0603BNA: DM = Daikin upflow/horizontal (DC = downflow/horizontal), 96 = AFUE, V = variable-speed motor (S = single-speed/9-speed per sheet), C = two-stage (M = modulating, N/C on SN/SC = per sheet), 060 = 60,000 BTU/h, 3 = 1200 CFM, B = 17.5in cabinet, N = low NOx (U = ultra-low NOx), trailing A/B = revision.

Cabinet width letter (inches wide)
CodeMeaning
A14.0
B17.5
C21.0
D24.5

Where this comes from: SS-DM96VC rev 11/23, Nomenclature, page 2.

Not fully confirmed: Only the DM96VC nomenclature page was read; the motor/valve letter meanings for SC/SN/MC are inferred from the product titles (Single-Stage Variable-Speed, Single-Stage 9-Speed, Modulating) (likely; the sheet does not say it outright).

Legacy 95% families (GMH95, GCH95, GMVC95, GCVC95, AMVC95)

How to read it: Example GMH950703BXA: G brand, M upflow/horizontal (C = counterflow/downflow), H = third letter (SS-GMH95 nomenclature lists 'H High Airflow' but which character it decodes was not verified (not confirmed)), 95 AFUE, 070 = 69,000 BTU/h input per spec sheet, 3 = 1200 CFM, B = 17.5in cabinet, X = low NOx, A = revision.

Older input digits: Input digits are rounded: 045 = 45-46k, 070 = 68-69k, 090 = 90-92k, 115 = 113-115k BTU/h (from SS-GMH95 and SS-GMVC95 Input rows).
